Last week our co-programmer here at the GCPH, Ewan McCorry attended Film Hub Scotland’s Exhibitors’ Day at Glasgow Film Festival 2021. To kickstart our Diary strand to the Blog (in which we let you hear about industry events the GCPH take part in) he reports back on the ‘New Programmes from FHS New Promoters’ event.
At the Film Hub Scotland Exhibitors’ Day during this year’s Glasgow Film Festival I had the opportunity to attend a Zoom panel discussion with ‘New Promoters’ of cinemas and festivals across Scotland. This included contributors from independent cinemas like the Glasgow Film Theatre and the Macrobert in Stirling, as well as festivals like Take One Action.

The panel was able to explain their different experiences of programming during lockdowns, COVID tiering and circuit breakers, for many it was their first time programming and promoting within the industry (something I can relate to myself as I started at GCPH only a few months before the first lockdown). This meant they had to adapt to a new and difficult chapter of cinema exhibition, which led to some fresh ideas for screenings that made for interesting inspiration on what to look out for when we, ourselves, reopen.
One idea in particular that struck me as interesting was from Yusuf at the GFT who put forward the idea of ‘Second Chance Screenings’. These are screenings of films that are so ubiquitous that it’s almost assumed everyone has seen them. One of the benefits of our new site is the ability to interact with our members and audience directly, are there any films in this vein you would like us to show? Films you might have missed the first time around or that simply eluded you so far? Please let us know either in the comments below or emailing us directly.
